Work Party No. 1 The Fernery

The Danesbury Volunteers’ morning work included:

  • Branch and Leaf clearing around the Fernery, paths/steps/flowerbed.·
  • Digging out dead Holly tree.
  • Re-use the 2x Holly support posts and the black ties for the new Paul Scarlett hawthorn tree in the middle of the wildflowers.
  • Weed around oak tree.
  • Cut down last year’s perennials around the fernery.
  • Check tree ties and loosen if necessary.
  • Feed shrubs with blood fish and bone meal.

The Sherrardspark Woodwardens – afternoon session

A group of volunteers from the Sherrardspark Woodwardens kindly responded to our request for help once again, and they visited the Fernery in the afternoon to undertake some work on the large Hawthorn tree that had fallen on the Eastern boundary of the Fernery that required their tools and skills.

The following photos were taken by the Woodwardens and show how much they enjoyed working in the open spaces at Danesbury once again, and they have our sincere thanks for their help.

Work Party No. 2 The Nature Reserve

Last month’s work continued in the small plantation of trees by the main path on the North East side of the Park Field. The photos for January and February (below) show how this area is now far more open to light which will encourage the trees to grow more fully and to a better shape. When cattle are present they will help the process of keeping scrub under control.
